In January 2004 the West Allegheny School board recognized the need for a way to fund activities that were outside those funded by the regular District budget. These included such things as teacher innovations / classroom enhancements that required testing before they could be added to the curriculum. The Board did not feel these types of expenses should be funded through taxes, but that they would definitely improve the District if private donation funded them.
Several members of the community and School District met to start forming the foundation. The first meeting was held in February 2004. The following month a Board of Trustees was created. Work started on forming the foundation by laws and applying for Non Profit Status --501c (3) through the state and IRS. The Foundation started with $365.94 in its account. August 2004 we received our Non Profit Status from the IRS. The Foundation also decided to expand it role to a School / Community Foundation. The Community would encompass Findlay, North Fayette and Oakdale. The Foundation felt we would get more support from the community with this initiative.
The first fund raising event took place at Quicksilver Golf Club and raised approx $8,000.00
With the flooding of the local community in September 2004 a request was presented to the Foundation by Oakdale Youth League. The request was to replace the outfield fence due to it being destroyed from the flooding. This would be the first project funded by the Foundation. Total cost to the foundation $4,000.00.The Foundation continued to fund / contribute to various school and community programs to get the name of the Foundation out to the community.
In April 2005 the Foundation established a Teachers Grant Brochure and Application. In September the Foundation awarded its first Teacher Grants. The Grants totaled close to $4,000.00.
In 2006 the Foundation continued to have various fund raising events and sponsor several community and school programs. The Foundation adopted new by-laws. The Foundation added (1) Elected Representative from each community along with a representative from the School Board.
In 2007 the Foundation started to organize it self into various committees and have these committees take more of an active role in the process the Foundation is run. The Foundation was able to come out with its first brochure. A website was also developed @ www.wafoundation.org
To date the foundation has raised over $100,000. The Foundation has also dispersed close to $80,000.00 to Teacher Grants and various Community programs.
